Here are some of our favorite reads:
1. Street Angel Goes to Juvie - another awesome book in the Street Angel series by Jim Rugg & Brian Maruca. If you are not familiar with Street Angel, Jesse "Street Angel" Sanchez, also known as "The Deadliest Girl Alive" is a homeless skateboarding pre-teen who fights the bad guys in each of her adventures. There are more books in the series and you'll want to read them all. Jesse is a badass and inspiring to so many girls and women - especailly those who skate. One of our mini shredder friends, Kala, reads each book the minute she gets her hands on it and then over and over until the next one comes out! The series is addicting!! You can get Street Angel Goes to Juvie HERE
2. Surfgirl Magazine - while not technically a book, it is one of our favorite reads because the entire magazine features women's surfing - it's chock full of travel destinations, interviews with your fav female surfers and articles on anything to do with surfing. And we have to say that the awesome visuals hook us in every time! You can subscribe HERE but you can usually find a copy at your local Barnes & Noble bookstore too!
3. Like a Dog by Tara Jepsen - Tara is a well known skateboarder, writer, filmer and so much more. Like a Dog is about a scrappy young skateboarder's story of underground worlds and fringe existences, confusing family relationships and the struggle for intimacy. We are huge fans of Tara's so we loved this book! It's paperback and lightweight, so throw it into your beach bag for a read by the waters edge. It deals with some hard subject matter - so best for teens and above. Get a copy HERE
4. Swell: A Sailing Surfer's Voyage of Awakening by Liz Clark,- This book is not technically just about surfing, but Captain Liz Clark spent her youth dreaming of traveling the world by sailboat and surfing remote waves. When she was 22, she met a mentor who helped turn her desire into reality. Embarking on an adventure that most only fantasize about, she set sail from Santa Barbara, California, as captain of her 40-foot sailboat, Swell, headed south in search of surf, self, and the wonder and learning that lies beyond the unbroken horizon. This book will make you want to start planning your next adventure... Order a copy HERE or pick it up next time you are at Target or Barnes & Noble.
5. Herewith - is a hybrid - it falls in-between book and magazine for its thick paper stock, saturated imagery, genius layouts, clean design and the ability to make us want more with every issue. Its focus is on surfing but no matter what images and articles they run, it's stunning and a great read. Inspiring and gorgeous to say the least! You can order it HERE
