Vans Announces Imilla Skate Doc Coming Soon!

We have been following Imilla Skate on IG for awhile now and love these women! So we wee very excited when we heard that Vans was dropping a doc on their female skate collective!

This dropped on International Women’s Day - Vans is saluting Imilla Skate, a collective of Indigenous women from Bolivia who challenge gender stereotypes through skateboarding—tearing down the notoriously steep streets wearing traditional pollera skirts.

For them, skateboarding is more than a sport—it’s a statement of resilience and empowerment in a machismo society. And now, they’re building a skate park and community center to inspire the next generation.

Documentary coming soon. Filmed by Optimist

Portland, Ore. (March 19, 2025) – Rockstar Energy is thrilled to announce the return of the Rockstar Energy Open, August 15-17, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. Building on the momentum of its groundbreaking inaugural event, which attracted 25,000 fans and featured more than 100 skaters, this year’s Rockstar Energy Open will once again transform Downtown Portland’s historic Waterfront Park into the epicenter of skateboard culture. The event will bring together the world’s best skateboarding pros, emerging talent, and die-hard fans for another unforgettable three-day experience alongside Rockstar athletes such as two-time Olympic gold medalist, Keegan Palmer, fan-favorite, Chris Joslin, and defending Men’s Street Final champion, Lazer Crawford.

The Rockstar Energy Open provides a global stage for top street and park skateboarders, offering custom-built courses designed to showcase the highest level of progression and creativity. The event will once again feature an inclusive Video Qualifying Series (VQS) on ThePlatfrm.com, giving skaters worldwide the opportunity to earn their spot to compete alongside the best invited pro skateboarders.

Starting June 2, 2025, skaters can submit their video parts for the chance to be selected to compete in Portland. Weekly cash prizes will be given out over the course of the seven-week VQS for best men’s and women’s video parts, overall best trick, and viewer’s choice. The same world-class judges attending the Rockstar Energy Open will judge the VQS and determine who secures a coveted spot in Portland. The Documentary We Have Been Waiting For - The Story of Gale Webb.

Growing up in the 70s with Gale Webb was every skateboarders dream. She wasn’t just a badass, she was inspiring to all of us. Gale put us in her skate shows, she reminded us to be better people and of course, to stay off of drugs. Gale Webb taught me so much about giving back to the next generation, and using your platform to help others.

We can’t wait to see the premier of this amazing documentary on Gale’s life.

Make sure you catch “A Promise to a Friend - The Story of Gale Webb” when it releases worldwide!

Our Skateboarders and Avril Lavigne supporting Paliskates, LA Fires, at The Grammys

Mazel, Quinne, Brooke, Klara, Briel, Mayzie ~ Photo Ian Logan

I'm so proud of our Southern California Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word team riders for volunteering their time to shoot this PSA for Paliskates that ran during The Grammy's last night. Avril Lavigne showing up at the skatepark to also support blew their minds!

Our youngest team rider, Brooke Benton is also sponsored by Paliskates so the loss hit her hard.

Paliskates is the longest-running female skate shop (25 years) owned by Erica, and it burned to the ground during the Palisades fires.

You can support the rebuild by buying the Paliskates merch you see in this video via Paliskates.net

CASL National Championships - These Team Riders Ruled!

Brooke, Anna and Francesca

Three of our team riders, Brooke Benton, Francesca Shuda and Anna Shea headed out to Lake Havasu last weekend to compete in the CASL National Championships. Not only did they all make podium in their respective divisions, they cheered on their friends and competitors throughout the weekend, proving that skateboarding is more about the friends you meet and make than standing on podium. We are so proud of them in every way!

We also heard that all three went to Vegas to celebrate their wins - way to roll girls!!

Brooke, Anna and Francesca

Anna Is the new National Champion for Park/Mini Girls Open Advanced and took second in Vert/Bowl Girls Open Advanced.

Francesca is the new National Champion for Girls Open Advanced Street.

Brooke moved up a division this year and took home 2nd place in Girls Open Advanced Street!

Congrats to Brooke, Anna and Francesca!!

Vans Combi Pool Party - The Last Hurrah

Brighton Zeuner - Photo Lauren Brooke Photography

After spending so many years covering the Vans Girls Combi Pool Party we were so sad to hear that this would be the very last event (combining men’s, women’s, legends and masters in one day) before the park was demolished. On top of that sad news, Ian and I were both sick, so we had to say good-bye from afar. Luckily, photographer Lauren Brooke generously offered to share her awesome photos from the women’s event and we were able to watch clips from friends as well as a Live Stream from Bucky Lasek on YouTube.

Thanks as always to Kristy and Steve Van Doren, World Cup Skateboarding, Dave Duncan as well as all the other people who come out and make this super special event happen!

Enjoy the images Lauren captured and say good-bye to an iconic skate site. You will be missed Vans Combi.

The Exposure Intermediate vert ramp session on day one was unbelievable - so many tricks went down and lets talk about Juno with those HUGE FS and BS airs - amazing.! Anna Shea pulled off a 540 that won her $200 for best trick and we celebrated and remembered our matriarch of skateboarding, Patti McGee. it was a beautiful way to end the day together.

The Exposure Skate Tribute led by founder Amelia Brodka, for Patti McGee was so special to all of us. And it was only fitt9ing that November 2nd was proclaimed “Patti McGee Day”. Patti’s daughter Hailey was in attendance ,and love for Patti was everywhere. Bryce Wettstein sang a song about Patti and then led the skaters in doing handstands across the ramp - Patti’s signature move that landed her on the cover of LIFE Magazine. You are missed greatly Patti, but never forgotten. xo

Exposure Skate just gets bigger and better each and every year - if that is even possible?! The level of skateboarding is through the roof with the new guard taking the lead and throwing down spin and flip tricks right and left. Led by 15 year old Arisa Trew (Paris Olympics Gold Medalist, Women’s Park) they know they can do anything, if they try.

Thanks to Amelia Brodka, Lesli Cohen and the entire Exposure Skate crew for putting this comp on year after year. What you have done for women’s skateboarding is simply amazing!

To start things off, here is a visual re-cap of part of Day One.

South African Skaters and Taking Up Space

Thabiso, Mmabatho, Neo, Zukie ~ Photo by Karabo Mookie

We are honored to share with you these stunning images of the South African skate crew, Spectrum, by the talented photographer, Karabo Mooki.

The words and interviews below, are his introduction to this rad group of South African skaters and why this photo essay was so important to him.

We couldn’t agree more.

Jeanne - Photo by Karabo Mooki

In a city notoriously known for its ruthless fast, fast-paced nature, Johannesburg, the ‘city of gold’, is not for the faint-hearted. Through South Africa’s tumultuous history of oppression and segregation rose a triumphant legacy of pride, an inherent pride that is recognized in the collective consciousness that makes up the fabric of South Africa’s youth culture.

Skateboarding has provided a foundation of lifelong friends for the girls that make up the crew known as Spectrum.

Spectrum is a collective of African women armed with skateboards who are reclaiming the streets of in Johannesburg, South Africa. Redefining what it means to be a woman in skateboarding in South Africa.Celebrating life in a community that places an emphasis on honoring girl code and giving rise to awareness in skateboarding for Black women.

Where did it all begin for you, where did you all come together?

We first noticed one another over a few weeks spotting each other at local skate parks in Johannesburg. When we started skating it was very easy to spot the few girls who were out skating, the community and the presence of girls skating wasn’t what it was a few months ago.

After sometime we were invited to a ‘Girls Shred’ sleepover and found that we all got along incredibly well which led us to staying in touch and getting together for skate sessions outside of the Girl Skate organization.

We wanted to create a sisterhood of skateboarders. We wanted to create something for ourselves. To be recognized by potential sponsors, I mean if we could get the attention of shoe sponsors, because we cant afford shoes, skateboarding in South Africa is extremely expensive, we definitely hope to get more love and support from local skate shops that would be great, but mostly we set out to connect to a larger community through our skating and sharing these moments through our online presence.

So far it’s been mostly about an expression for fun.

Mmabatho photos by Karabo Mookie

What do you believe could be different in the industry?

There needs to be more equality, in terms of judging everyone equally. Lets take out the favoritism.

- Mmabatho

What would you like to see change in the way people perceive you as a skateboarder?

One thing that annoys me is the reaction guys have to seeing us do tricks we’ve done countless times as if it's the first time we’ve done it, just because we are girls. We might be built different, but it doesn't mean I cant do what you can do, we both have feet and as long as we put time into this we should both be able to excel.

- Neo

Zuki ~ Photo Karabo Mookie

When did you have that moment where you felt like you didn't want to hide your love for skateboarding from your family?

I realized I didn't want to hide skateboarding from my family any longer or keep it this secretive activity when I had to walk to school, knowing that my board was at home I was stuck walking places, I felt like a chump walking places when I knew I could be skating places and seeing things.

- Zukie

Thabiso ~ Photos Karabo Mookie

What has the reception been like from your elders as Black women in skateboarding?

Not only do we have to prove ourselves to the skateboarding community of but also our elders. The community outside of skating, it’s quite a lot to prove to them that this is what I love to do, because all they see is me falling and panic, with this idea that ‘you’re a girl you’re not supposed to be falling’. They don’t see skating as a career, my grandparents for example do not see the point of it, they stress about me always being injured. They don’t realize that I am here because I want to be here, I don’t do this for the fame or anything else, I’m passionate about it and it makes me happy. With passion everything that is meant for you will eventually come toward you because you are destined for it.

-  Thabiso

Zukie ~ Photo Karabo Mookie

Do you feel like girls are put in a position to prove themselves in skateboarding?

You’re put in that position at first, when I started skating it was very scary, I was intimidated by going to parks and seeing the overwhelming presence of men in parks that were excelling at skateboarding.

I had to force myself to confront my fears at the park and claim my right to skate in this male-dominated space.

- Zukie

Thabiso ~ Photo Karabo Mookie

What does skateboarding feel like to you?

Skating to me means freedom, an unexplainable feeling. Freedom is an expression of art to me, as an artist skateboarding is my wheelhouse. When I skate the I’m overwhelmed with this great feeling, when I bomb hills, I feel so free. Skating evokes a sense of happiness, the emotion of escaping from my reality, no matter how shitty I feel on a specific day, I can go out and skate and feel great again. It always reminds me of how much of a great time I have skateboarding and with the people that surround me. Every time I’m on the board my friends motivate me and make me feel more comfortable about being on my board and that’s something I appreciate greatly because it brings me pure happiness.

- Thabiso

Parting Words:

What do you believe could be different in the industry?

There needs to be more equality, in terms of judging everyone equally. Lets take out the favoritism.

 - Mmabatho

We want to be appreciated, we putting in blood sweat and tear and not to be recognized for the work we are putting in is something that needs to be changed. The industry needs to stop with the bias.

- Neo

It’s not enough to just show up, the industry needs to recognize the girls who are contributing to the culture and working hard at it. We want equality and fairness.

- Zukie

We love seeing female skaters featured more and more in commercials lately - it’s inspiring for other girls to see. It’s also important to point out that they allowed Anna to skate hard and not just cruise around the park. Can we talk about her HUGE air over the fence!!???

The "First Lady of Skateboarding," Patti McGee, Has Passed Away.

Patti McGee in 1965 on the cover of the 4th issue of Skateboarder Magazine

We are so sorry to share the news that the amazing Patti McGee has passed away.

Patti was the first woman to be inducted into the Skateboard Hall of Fame and she was also the only female skater (that I am aware of) to have 2 major magazine covers in one year - Life Magazine & Skateboarder Magazine both in 1965.

She was featured in a “Ma Bell” telephone commercial as well - and it is one of the best commercials, featuring a skater, that we have ever seen.

With 100% certainty, we know that Patti paved the way for all of us, because really, how many girls do you think took a chance & skateboarded back in the 1960's?  Not many.

She was an absolute icon in the skateboard world and in her later years, she attended almost all the women’s skate events in Southern California to cheer on the girls and women who were competing

But, most of all, she was an amazing lady and one I am proud to have known. We want to remember her fondly for her style and grace and continue to thank her for her contributions to women's skateboarding.

RIP Patti, and we hope you are up there skating free with that beautiful smile of yours.
