The 3rd GN4LW Micro Grant Goes To...

Photos by Blaine Chostetler, Kaden Prado, and CJ Anderson

We are proud to announce that our third Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word micro-grant was awarded this past week to Salty Bitches in Utah! Twenty-two year old Noelle Sanders has been running this all-female skate group and planning consistent meet-ups with girls in the Salt Lake area for the past year, and the results have been huge. She has started a skate community that is growing each and every time she throws an event - all ages and abilities are welcome and the the environment is encouraging for  beginners, to avid skaters working on that next trick.

In a place where girls thought they were the only one at their local skatepark, they now have new female friends to skate with, hit up various parks with, film with, and to connect and encourage other girls to get on a board and skate.

We think that's pretty rad, and wanted to help Noelle continue her sessions and expand her vision even more!

Salty Bitches just had an amazing write up in Salt Lake City Weekly - you can read about them  HERE

Please follow Salty Bitches on instagram @_saltybitches

This grant was made possible by our friends at Tabula Rasa in Manhattan Beach, CA - they threw a launch party for our "Good Vibes" bag collab with MIXT Studio and gave 10% of the sales that night to Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word micro-grants - huge thanks to Tabula Rasa for their generous donation.

Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word is providing micro grants for projects that we feel help further women and girls in skateboarding - especially those endeavors that involve creating and changing the media perception of girls in action sports and those that create a welcoming space for women to get together and skate. Grants are made possible through GN4LW via the sale of our skateboard line with Dwindle Distribution, as well as sales from our in-house apparel line and our all girls skateboard book "It's Not About Pretty". We also have select partnerships that we engage in from time to time, that also make these micro grants possible.

If you'd like to apply for a micro-grant please hit us up HERE

A Pro Female Skater Gets Her Own Signature Shoe!

 all images via Adidas

Pro skateboarder Nora Vasconcellos is flying high! Today marks the launch of her first signature Adidas shoe!  This shoe is pure Nora - a customized take on the classic Adidas Matchcourt RX. As everyone knows, Nora is often seen wearing lavender/purple at contests and in skate videos, so this shoe fits right in! It has a really rad floral design on the heel tab, designed by Nora herself (of course).

The shoe’s upper is constructed with a mix of canvas and suede, fading from a light purple on the toebox to a slightly darker purple on the midfoot and heel, where the embroidery provides a bold pop of style. A white three stripes graphic and white midsole provide contrast, and further details arrive via the customized tongue and heel patches, a gold “Nora” foil stamp, and white insoles with whimsical orange and teal patterns.

The new Adidas NORA sneaker is available in unisex sizes on adidas.com starting today, July 7th, and retails for $75 USD.

We have always thought that there should be more books on women's skateboarding in the world, so when we started thinking about publishing our first book

It's Not About Pretty: A Book About Radical Skater Girls

we decided to form a small publishing company under our

Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word

brand, with the goal of publishing at least one book per year about women and girls skateboarding and possibly other sports featuring women that are not mainstream (yet).

We are proud to say that the new women's skate book

CONCRETE GIRLS

by Charlotte Thomas launches today and focuses on the female skateboarding scene in the UK. Charlotte has been documenting female skaters like Lucy Adams, Stefani Nurding, Rianne Evans and more for the past five years. The compilation of her work is shown in this beautiful 10x10 book that looks great on your coffee table or nightstand and provides major skate inspiration on every page.

Part of the Vans global family since 2014, Lizzie Armanto was recently featured in the latest Vans global brand campaign chapter, “ Girls Skate India ”, documenting her experience on inspiring and empowering young women in India through skateboarding and D.I.Y. spot building, activities that are often considered unorthodox for girls

Check Out Our New Collab That Supports Girls In Skateboarding!
Photos Siri Berting for MIXT Studio

We are stoked to announce our latest collab with the amazing MIXT STUDIO!  This awesome collab, with it's GOOD VIBES tote bag and wristlet, celebrates the power of girls by giving back to girls in skateboarding with every tote or wrislet sold.

The palm tree photos on the bag and wrislet were taken by Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word founder, Cindy Whitehead,  during her travels on both the east and west coasts. Both products have the Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word logo inside, and the tote bag also has our family friendly motto and Cindy's signature that you see in the photo above. And each product has that fluffy pom-pom you see above.

We love that these bags are great for any adventure you may have. They are  made of strong, yet lightweight tyvek, they are also water resistant, meaning you can throw that wet bathing suit, rash guard or spring suit in the tote with no problem. Or how about your skate gear? Yep, the tote bag easily fits that too. With its two outside pockets and one inside pocket, you can organize all your stuff easily.  Or use it as a beach bag and head off to a fun surf session with friends! The fun wrislet is perfect for small items - like your skate tool, wax, sunscreen, lip balm, bikini and more!

PARTY WITH US!!  If you are in the Los Angeles area you are invited to our launch party this Friday night from 5-7 PM hosted by the amazing store TABULA RASA in Manhattan Beach - and check this out - Tabula Rasa has generously offered to give 10% of all store sales that evening back to girls in skateboarding as well!   We hope to see you there!!

Pssst - it's also Cindy's birthday that night so it's a dual celebration!

Can't get to the launch party? We are bummed to miss you, but you can purchase a wrislet or tote bag right  HERE!

A Really Fun Judi Oyama x Eloise Dorr Collab Is Launching!
Art collab with  Eloise Dorr
Judi in the late 70's FS Grind - Photo Michael Goldman

1970's pro skateboarder, Judi Oyama, is a badass. She was a trailblazer back when very few girls skated vert and she also raced slalom - many times against the guys. She is an orginal Santa Cruz / NHS team rider. Her skate history sits not only in the NHS museum but also in the Smithsonian.  She competed in both the Gold Cup Series and the Hester Series back in the day and still races and skates parks today. Her line of apparel under her Badass Skatemom name is a hit not only with skateboarders, but with the CrossFit community as well.  In addition to all of this, Judi is the wife of cyclocross racer Greg Foy, mom to Taylor and Ryan, and "dog mom" to a very rad rescue dog named Cooper.

So when Judi gave us the inside scoop about this collab she was doing with artist Eloise Dorr, we knew it was going to be something very special. We love Eloise's' art and have been following her progression for awhile now. Vans has had her as part of their Get On Board event this past month, and her work has been the focus of qiute a few solo shows all over the world. It's the type of art that makes you smile and just feel GOOD.

We had a chance to catch up with Judi during the (very) busy week of her Skateboard Hall of Fame induction, to find out how this collab came into existence, and what products will be rolling out.

Skateborading Hall of Fame takes place Friday, May 4, 2018 in the city of Anaheim

We know you are super busy getting ready for your Skateboard Hall of Fame induction Friday night (yeah!!), but we have a few questions we want to ask you about this awesome new collab that's launching!

How did you discover Eloise and her artwork?

I have never met Eloise in person. I saw her work on Instagram and loved her illustration style. I like supporting female skate artists so bought a few of her art pieces from her website. She has a really fresh style. Her silhouette characters make me smile.

What about her illustrations makes her art one of your favorites?

For one, I love the subject matter (skateboarders) the humor she adds to her illustrations is awesome. The details she adds and scenes she puts her characters in are super fun.

How did the collab between you two come about?

I hired Eloise to paint a slalom skate image my dad took because I wanted to see that image in her style for a personal wall art area I am creating in my house. This led to another piece and then another. Being an owner of a design company and years of being a Creative Director I have discovered many artists and watched their careers grow. I feel Eloise is just at the beginning of an amazing career. After communicating via email Eloise started doing a few other designs.  We worked out a small business relationship together to build some fun items to put on my Badass Skatemom site

Judi Oyama slalom run circa 1970's / Photo Richard Oyama

These fun stickers are a part of the Judi Oyama x Eloise collab and are available now

When will the collab items be released?

The Stickers and Magnets are available now on my Badass SkateMom site.

The collab mugs and t-shirts are coming soon - so keep checking back!

We also have a limited run of 100 skate decks that are in early stages of development. They will be made in the USA with my Slalom Skate board sponsor Sk8kings.  Something we’ve been talking about doing for years with them, and since SHOF has happened, I decided to finally make a deck. Thanks also for your encouragement to do something like this, that I never thought possible years into the sport.

What do you hope people feel/think when you see this collab?

My hope is that people will enjoy and graphic and it will make them happy. Being a long time skater it is awesome to finally make a limited edition board with an amazing artist Eloise Dorr.

Congratulations to Judi on her Skateboarding Hall of Fame induction, and on this fun collab with artist Eloise Dorr. We can't wait for the full launch so we can get our hands on all the products!

More info on Judi & Eloise

Eloise Dörr is a 22 year old artist from Oxford, now living and working in London. Zara Percy & The New Girl Power Board.

Santa Monica skater, Zara Percy, was invited to come check out the new Dusters California x Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word GIRL POWER cruiser board before it launched in stores worldwide. Zara told us a little bit about what it's like when you first start skateboarding and you're the only girl at the skatepark, and why she thinks the new GIRL POWER board is so special.

We are proud to say that this board gives a portion of its proceeds back to Bridge to Skate, a 501c3 non-profit that empowers today’s youth to take control of their lives, using skateboarding as a vehicle for creative expression and a way of owning their own wheels.

You can follow Zara on instagram at @zarapercy

Nora Vasconcellos Makes Women's Skate History.

Welcome Skate Deck, Krux Trucks, OJ Wheels, Mob Grip Tape

It's only appropriate that today is the first day of Female History Month and we lead off with this story...

We have been waiting since the day we started skateboarding to be able to walk into a skate shop, throw some cash down on the counter, and get a board set up with all pro female skate products. If we would have asked that question at our local skate shop even a year ago, they would have just smiled and shook their heads.

The great news is, that moment has finally come!  And Nora Vasconcellos has made skate history this month as the only female skater who has ever had a full pro product line where you could actually put together a complete board that is all her!

Check it out:

*Nora Vasconcellos Pro Model Welcome Skateboards Deck - various colors and sizes
*Nora's Pro Model Krux Trucks - 7.6 to 8.5 available
*Nora's Purple "Cat & Mouse" wheels from OJ Wheels - 55mm 101a
*Nora grip tape by Mob - in two different graphics

You can even order each piece you see above, on line at So Cal Skate Shop

So basically you can put together an entire set up of Nora pro products if you want to. We never thought we would see a day where we'd be able to say that - and it's so frigging RAD.

Why is that important? Because girls out there need female role models - especially in a male dominated sport - and by having pro products from their favorite female skaters on the market, these young girls can finally take pride in skating a pro female riders deck, her wheels, her trucks, and even her griptape.

As always, please support products that suport female skaters - the time is NOW to skate a deck, wheels, trucks, grip tape and even shoes & apparel  from your favorite female pro riders!

The New Dusters X GN4LW #GirlPower Cruiser Board.

Photos of Elise Crigar by Alex Barnes

Guess what?!  We collaborated with Dusters California and artist Priscilla Witte to bring you a super rad, feminism-powered cruiser skateboard!

In a time when women have to work twice as hard for half the respect, Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word collaborates with Dusters California and artist Priscilla Witte to give women a boost of GIRL POWER.

“Women are fighting for equality and respect in all industries,” said Cindy Whitehead, GN4LW founder. “The GIRL POWER cruiser is one way I can tell the women of the world that I stand with them.” Cindy hopes to empower and inspire women with messages such as, “FEMINIST, my other favorite F word,” and “Be a Rebel. Take a Risk” scattered throughout the board’s illustration.

Photo Alex Barnes

"As an artist, I felt it was important for me to use symbols and words on this board to help remind female skaters to stay strong, conquer your fears, be yourself, follow what inspires you, and reach your goals,” said Priscilla, who’s known for her simplistic, quirky, and relatable style.

The GN4LW “GIRL POWER” cruiser skateboard is designed for both a women’s mind and body, coming in at 8.25” wide, 31” long, with a 16” wheelbase. It includes Tensor trucks in red and blue, Dusters wheels in red and blue, and 1/8” riser pads. It’s pre-gripped with clear broadcast griptape and boasts a signed illustration of an iconic Cindy photo, which features her skating a halfpipe in the 70’s with headphones on (listening to Joan Jett of course!).

Photo of Kala Fernandez by Ian Logan

Cindy has led the fight for women’s equality in skateboarding ever since she conquered the male-dominated profession of pro-vert skateboarding in the 70’s. To this day, she is the only female to be featured in the centerfold of a skateboarding magazine with a two-page article, her skateboard history has been taken into the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Sports History collections, and her TEDx talk has empowered women everywhere. Cindy was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame on May 13, 2016.

This is the 7th deck in a long line of Dusters and GN4LW collaborations where a portion of the sales benefit a 501c3 non-profit. This year’s recipient is Bridge to Skate: a nonprofit that uses skateboarding to transform the lives of youth by creating dynamic new paths to self-confidence, personal empowerment, and responsibility for each other and their communities.

Street Angel - The Skateboarding Comic Book Heroine.
All images /art work are property of Jim Rugg

To say we have been fans of the comic Street Angel for quite a while is putting it mildly. From the moment we were introduced to badass, skateboarding, ninja fighting, homeless, pre-teen Jesse Sanchez, AKA "Street Angel", we were hooked!

"Jesse, a.k.a. Street Angel is a rare gem in the male-dominated world of comic book characters. When you finally find a comic book hero that is female, skateboards, and kicks ass, that's when you know young girls out there now have a strong super hero to follow. STREET ANGEL shows girls that they can be anything they want to be, including someone who saves the world and fights injustices, one bad guy at a time. She also defies female stereotypes right and left, and that is pretty darn cool."

-Cindy Whitehead, founder of Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word

The creators of Street Angel,  Jim Rugg (artist & author) & Brian Maruca (author), transport us to a world where a young girl is a world-class street skateboarder,  living on the streets, fighting ninjas and drugs, and she possesses powers that help her escape traps, scale walls, pick locks and every other cool thing we wished we could do at that age.  She has friends like Bell, Bald Eagle and Josey the dog. Her enemies include Dr. Skatenstein, The Goose, Boy Jesse and more.

The ongoing story of Jesse and her fight for justice now comes in book form! Oversized and colorful, these books are a perfect gift for any rad girl (or boy) in your life. The Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word crew of skaters read them with a vengeance!

The latest book in the series is "Street Angel - Super Hero For A Day" - which is one of our favorites. Read the snip below to get an idea of the book's premise.

"Jesse knows the pressures of being the girl who always saves the day and she’s okay with it. It’s just who she is. But when she and her friends stumble across a powerful alien artifact - they soon realize that being a superhero isn’t all fun and games."

You can read the books in any order you choose, but we suggest starting at the beginning and working your way through the rich storylines as Jesse evolves and gathers new friends and enemies along the way.

The Street Angel series of books are available via Amazon right ----> HERE  or via the individual links to each book below.

#GirlPower Ruled At The Odells x Girl Is Not A 4 Letter Word Launch Party!

Photos Ian Logan and Cindy Whitehead

The Odells

x Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word Yurt Takeover was such a FUN event! People came straight from the Women's March in Downtown LA to continue the #GirlPower fueled day at

The Odells Shop

in Silverlake. There was a DJ spinning tunes all afternoon, drinks from our friend Deb Glassman at  Lybations Cocktails and Nica Craft Beer provided by Andrew. There was yummy food by Black Cat LA, and pro skateboarder Arianna Carmona, soul skater Elise Crigar and mini shredder, Quinne Daniels were on hand to sign copies of the

"It's Not About Pretty"

book. The new Dusters x Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word

"Girl Power"

cruiser board was launched (so many girls had huge grins on their faces as they took their boards out the door to ride) and a showing of photographer Ian Logan's work, featuring female skaters, was on display in the Odell's yurt.

It was a really special treat to have soul skater Sierra Prescott drop by to see her photo on the wall, legendary 70's skate photographer Hugh Holland came in to congratulate the girls, and artist Priscilla Witte - who did the illustrations for the new cruiser - was there as well. LA84's Jeremy Rosenberg, and Justine Siegal who runs "Baseball for All" dropped in to show support, along with a lot of our Venice skater friends - Heidi Lemmon & her daughter, Kala & Vivian Fernandez, Julie Daniels, as well as Jesse Swalley and his family. Desiree Moore from Dwindle and Chantelle Heroux from Bridge to Skate came by and it was really special to get a pic of them together - they are both a huge part of making this collab board come together!

We loved meeting all the young skater girls who came out with their moms and dads - you are the future and we need more girls skateboarding - so thank you! We hope to see all of you at the skatepark for a girls session soon.

Huge thanks to Laura, Jason and Jaime from

The Odells

Shop, their amazing team, as well as the sponsors of the event - it couldn't have happened with out all of these awesome people!
