Welcome to the new "Cute".

Roxy is redefining the word "CUTE" and we love it! The new video features Roxy athletes, Chloe Kim, Torah Bright, Stephanie Gilmore, Lisa Anderson, and more.

You’ve called us cute. And sure, that’s fair. We are cute. Cute is sweet, kind, shy. But also, strong, brave...gnarly. Our idea of cute is a little upside down. Cute is saying, “I can do this… I got this.” Cute is just going for it. And, it’s ok if you fall. Cute is winning a world title. Actually, scratch that. SEVEN world titles. Cute is more than one thing, because we are more than one thing… Here’s to the next chapter of CUTE

Girls Can't Surf.

We always say, "thank the women who came before you, because they paved the away"

Surfing is no different than skateboarding with its past history of sexism, no or low prize money, and prioritizing girls in bikini contests over the women out there competing on the waves. Now the women of pro surfing back in the day are speaking out about how that felt and what they did to change the game.

We can't wait to see  "GIRLS CAN'T SURF"!

What It's Really Like To Prepare to Surf Jaws.

We love this new series from Red Bull and it features two big-wave female surfers and their journey to Jaws!

Surfing massive Jaws is already nerve-racking — imagine doing it in front of a worldwide audience of millions. That's where we pick up with Emi Erickson, one of Hawaii's best-known, young big wave surfers, and Izzi Gomez, an up-and-comer still searching to find her footing in the mountains of Jaws.

No Small Feat is an all-female big-wave series in which we embed with Erickson and Gomez in the days leading up to the 2019 Jaws Big Wave Championship. It's a raw and revealing look behind the scenes of one of the planet's most dangerous — and often thankless — extreme sports.

With Nora Vasconcellos, Laura Enever, Jaleesa Vincent, Shanae Collins, Frankie Harrer and special guests Stephanie Gilmore, Nicole Hause and Jordyn Barratt. What Does Olympic Postponement Mean For Skateboarding?

Well, it's official, the IOC has agreed that it is best to postpone the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for one year. As fas as a date, all we know right now is that it will be held in Japan sometime before end of summer 2021. Most agree, that for the health of the athletes and everyone else, this is the best bet right now while the coronavirus is running rampant across the world.

Host country Japan, and the IOC have also determined that they will still be called the 2020 Tokyo Olympics - even though they will be held in 2021. This is the first time in history that the Olympic Games have been moved like this. Back in 1916, 1940 and 1944, the Olympic Games were canceled because of war.

Qualifiers - Skateboarding has yet to have its qualifiers.  At first, some qualifiers were postponed, some were canceled and no one really knew how this would all work out... So this postponement of the Olympics by one year is good news for skateboarders worrying about all that. One less pressure to think/worry about.

The tricky news is, that sometimes athletes peak. Sometimes you have a good year, sometimes you don't. Skateboarders who were in the top five or six in points this past year may not be on the podium when we return to regular competition. There may also be younger skateboarders coming up that now could potentially qualify next year.

It's like we are starting all over from square one in some ways. It's anyone's guess what type of shake-ups we may see moving forward.

Surfing may have an even harder time because they already had their qualifiers. Carissa Moore and Caroline Marks have already been announced, and celebrated, as the two women who have earned their spots on the 2020 USA Olympic team.

What happens now? Do they keep their spots or does the WSL start the clock all over again and the women (and men) have to again pre-qualify?

These are all questions that we will eventually find out the answers to as we move along, but in the meantime, please #stayhome and stay safe!
American Girl's Joss, Gets A Sweet Surf Van.

In case you missed the awesome launch of JOSS - a hard of hearing surfer doll from American Girl a month or so ago - Joss is a fierce surfer girl who never backs down from a challenge—even if it means taking a chance on something new, like trying out for cheer. But landing a spot on the cheer team is harder than it looks: Joss is hard of hearing and often misses the count. She’s determined to prove herself as a cheerleader and a surfer girl and realizes that an all-in attitude and an open mind might help her fly higher than ever before.

Now, Joss has a tricked out VW Van that is pretty much everyone's dream van, if you surf or skateboard.

Joss loves riding to the beach in her brother Liam’s surf van—it has everything they need for a great day in the sun. They can sleep, watch videos, and hang out between surf sessions, and there’s plenty of pretend food to snack on! It has working headlights, turn signals, windshield wipers, and radio. There are sounds for the horn and ignition, and a button to push to hear a message from Joss. Plus, there’s a storage bench that folds into a bed, a pop-up stove, and a fold-out table.

Set also includes:

* Two graphic throw pillows for lounging
* A bed pillow for sleeping
* A blanket and sleeping bag for camping out in the van
* A mattress for the fold-out bed
* A patterned rug to keep sand off the van floor
* A beach scene towel for drying off
* Two sticker sheets to decorate the interior and exterior of the van
* Cooking supplies including a pot, a pan, and tongs for making meals on the pullout stove
* A vase and flower for the dashboard
* A laptop with two reversible laptop screens to edit videos and register for the cheer team
* Five photos of cheer competitions and surfing
* A map of surf hotspots to keep in the glove compartment
* A surf magazine that includes an article about Tina Hart, Joss’s surfing idol
* A plate with a cool wave graphic
* A juice can and a smoothie bottle
* A burrito and a sandwich for quick grab-and-go lunches
* A parfait with fruit, yogurt, and granola and a spoon to eat it with
* A bag of pretzels to snack on
* A bunch of bananas and a container of raspberries
* Two popsicles with wrappers
* A surfboard and two rack straps to attach it to the van’s roof rack
* A skateboard Joss can use to practice her surfing moves out of the water
* A dog bowl for when Joss’s bulldog, Murph, comes to the beach
* A first aid bag with bandage stickers, ointment, a bandage wrap, an ice pack, scissors, five gauze     pads, pain reliever, peroxide, and a Surfer’s Handbook with first-aid info
* A video projector with a fabric screen and a set of image discs for watching surf videos on the beach
* A piece of chicken and a spatula to cook out
*A fried egg, pancakes, and bacon for the perfect beach breakfast
* A pretend cooler to keep all the food and drinks chilled

The VW Van from American Girl with all of the above retails for $650 - Joss doll not included
The Long Awaited "Patti People" Film Is Here!

For a few months, we've been seeing posts on Nora's Instagram about "Patti People" and tags for the @patti Instagram floating across our feed. Many people have been wondered what it was and what the result would be from this road trip in a old black limo that skateboarder Nora Vasconcellos, and surfers Laura Enever and Jaleesa Vincent were on together. The photos and clips posted were visually intriguing.

LA and NYC each had a premier of the film "THIS WAY" and now you can see it too. It's visually stunning, different and creative - something we all need to see more of these days.

The film is about;

"Two surfers. One skateboarder. One 1994 stretch limo. 120 cans of PBR. One long road down the east coast of the US. 9 days of fucken good times".

Billabong, unveils their latest female content series for 2019, "Know the Feeling." The progressive video series features multiple female surfers, including world-renowned athlete Laura Enever, as well as three young women, Monica Guo, Meryem El Gardoum and Natasha Sand, who are pioneering women's surfing in China, Morocco and Sri Lanka.

Shot in each of the women's hometowns, the campaign shares both the inspiring women's stories of breaking through cultural norms to become surfers and also a local perspective on the food, environment, and people that make their surf community unique.

The "Know the Feeling" video series is about the magic of the ocean that connects us all. It's for the women who see the sea not as limiting, but as an invitation. This latest campaign from Billabong showcases the power of what surfing can bring to an individual and community, and how wherever our travels take us, no matter what language you may speak, in the ocean we are all connected with the same voice. The bond we forge across the sea is a freedom, a familiarity. And when you feel it, you'll know.

Trouble: The Lisa Anderson Story - Coming To Itunes!.

We always need more films on strong women in action sports and we can't wait to see the release of "TROUBLE: The Lisa Anderson Story",  about pro surfer & trailbalzer Lisa Anderson. Here's the official info from the film.

Lisa Andersen is one of surfing’s few transcendent stars. She is grace and beauty coupled with tenacity and fearlessness. A 4x world champ and inductee into the Surfer Hall of Fame, she is a true icon.

She discovered surfing when she was 13, though it was not what her parents wanted. They felt the beach was dangerous. Lisa did nothing to ease their concerns and eventually wound up in juvenile hall. Her father smashed her surfboard, so Lisa hatched an escape plan. She decided to go to Huntington Beach, leaving a note behind that read, “Going to California to become world surfing champion.” She was homeless before being taken in by an abusive local.

Unlucky in relationships, she was abused often, and had to runaway time and again. Especially when she felt trapped. In the water, she was something else, and surfed like a gorgeous disaster. But she could never quite put it all together, until career suicide presented itself. An unexpected pregnancy. Over objections, she decided to have the child and in so doing broke through and became a champ.

Trouble follows Lisa on her human journey. Surf is a beautiful backdrop but the real story is the epic poem of her life. It is the story of a self-made, American woman. It is a story of today.

You can download it for $9.99 on iTunes on May 14, or pre-order it now!

We can't wait!
Salty Little Sliders Is A Must For Your Daughters Book Shelf.

We love fun new books that show girls surfing or skateboarding - especially those that are geared to all ages. Here is one of our new favorites!

The Skating Adventures of The Salty Little Sliders is a collaboration between artist Dave Gardner and Salty Little Slider creative director and founder Stacy Forrester.

The story follows four friends, Sunny, Moon, Finn, and Koa on a day filled with skate adventures in neighborhoods, backyard pools and skateparks. The book asks questions like "Can one move be the beginning of another?", "Can anyone of us push the limits of all of us?" and more. Great way to start conversations with your girls and a great way to look at skateboarding as well.

The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and every page is chock full of action and color. We guarantee that you won't want to put it down.

The adventures the kids have in the book are also about sharing joy and stoke with those around you. It also speaks to the importance of supporting one another with kindness and respect.

There is a hardback book featuring The Salty Little Sliders that focuses more on their surfing adventures  - it's pretty awesome too.

There is also a cute clothing line for kids that's available in their online shop (and in their fun store, Sawyer Land and Sea Supply,  if you live near Santa Cruz) that features the characters in the book - our favorite is the "Sunny Solo Tee"!

You can check out the clothing line and the books, as well as place an order HERE

Surfing, Passion & Making A Difference With Three Top Female Surfers.

Sit back and watch this beautiful & inspiring film from The Inertia!

In Summer of 2018, The Inertia traveled to El Salvador with Kassia Meador, Leah Dawson, and Lola Mignot, three outstanding women who are inspiring the next generation of ocean lovers through their alternative approach to both surfing and life. Each has developed a strong voice as a leader in surfing, and managed to do so on her own terms. They ride the boards they want, spearhead projects that speak to their passions, and keep their eyes peeled for interesting ways to engage that fascinating nexus where surfing and the rest of the world collide. We wanted to better understand each woman’s approach to living a fulfilling life and to meaningfully engage with El Salvador’s beautiful culture.

How an Inclusion Rider Could Help Change the Game for Female Action Sports Athletes & Leave a Legacy of Hope For Future Generations

By Cindy Whitehead

The news hitting the internet and beyond recently, that Olympic swimmer, and 4x medalist, Simone Manuel, had decided to give up her NCAA status and finally turn pro stopped those in the swimming world in their tracks. But the news was so much bigger than just that. Simone had signed an unprecedented contract, for a professional athlete, with swimming giant; TYR Sport that includes an "inclusion rider".

The time is now for women in action sports to get more familiar as to why they should be following in Simone’s history making footsteps.

First of all, what is an inclusion rider?

An inclusion rider is a provision added to a contract to ensure that companies meet certain levels of diversity, for example regarding the inclusion of women, people of color, LGBT people and people with disabilities. Inclusion riders are becoming more common in industries such as film and television, when an actress with some clout wants to make sure the film she is starring in has the diversity she wishes to see in the world – not just on screen but perhaps behind the scenes as well. The quote from Simone’s press release states, “Through this stipulation with TYR Simone ensures that her partners extend meaningful opportunities to traditionally underrepresented groups and that diversity be reflected in the creative efforts she pursues with the brand.” How rad is that?

Why would I want or need this?

It's great to get a major sponsorship deal with a huge company so you can skate, ride, board or surf full time as a pro. That's the goal right? And right now we are seeing that that happens for only a small group of select female pros in these sports. But what, if in addition to your amazing and financially lucrative contract, you could do something, with very little effort, that helps bring up more women in your sport? An inclusion rider can do just that. It can show the company you are representing that if they believe in you, you also want them to enact initiatives to support other women out there as well. That is a win win. In swimming it’s no longer just about Simone and her lucrative endorsement deal, it is now about Simone making a living at the sport she excels in and bringing future generations up with her so they too can have this type of opportunity in the future, if they choose to.

“I don’t have that type of power, I’m not Tony Hawk!”

If you are being offered a lucrative endorsement deal, yes you do have the power to initiate change. Before you read the first paragraph in this article did you know who Simone Manuel was? If you don’t follow competitive swimming, then perhaps not. And that’s my point. Simone is well known in her sport, enough so that her agents felt comfortable adding this rider to her very first, professional contract. And Simone believed in herself enough to stand behind what she felt was important to her and to fight for it. Basically she went out of her way to make sure that TYR was on the same page as she was when it comes to supporting women and people of color.

And no, Simone is not a household name (yet) like Tony Hawk, but this past month everyone in sports, and beyond, is talking about the changes she is creating for women and people of color. She is now, not only known as an Olympic Medalist, she is known as a game changer.

Some of you are already thinking, " There isn't enough of the proverbial pie to go around to be rocking the boat!"

At this moment it may look that way for sure, but I’ll bet that you have more power than you believe you do. And right now it may seem cool to be the only woman on that all guys skate, surf or BMX team or under contract, but the way we grow the sport and get higher levels of pay is by raising other female athletes up with us. The women of action sports are stronger together than they are if each one is acting solely on her own behalf. Isn’t the final goal to have teams and companies with equal amounts of male and female riders? That means we have created effective change. Trust me it’s true. You only need to look back at women’s sports history to see how it works.

Did you watch the 2017 movie, "Battle of the Sexes", about Billie Jean King and how she took on the tennis association for equal pay back in 1973? She put herself on the line to better the sport for all the women she was playing with. Her legacy today is more than a woman who won tournaments and championships; it is that of a feminist and strong woman who fought for equality so women coming up today could make tennis an actual career.

Are you aware that pro skater Mimi Knoop and Cara-Beth Burnside formed The Alliance back in 2009 and fought for equal prize money at the X-Games for women and men? They achieved this goal and that is the reason the women competing today in summer and winter X-Games get the same money as their male counterparts. Both Mimi and Cara-Beth have very impressive skating careers, but I am most inspired by the change they made for women in skateboarding that benefits every girl and woman financially at this competition, so they can keep on skating hard, just like the guys do.

What about the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing (CEWS) which was co-founded by Professional Surfers Paige Alms, Keala Kennelly, Andrea Moller, Bianca Valenti and SMC Harbor Commissioner Sabrina Brennan and attorney Karen Tynan. They have fought tirelessly for women to be able to surf during the Mavericks Big Wave Challenge. And they are still fighting on behalf of female big wave riders everywhere.

Many, many women have come before you to fight for various forms of change and many more are still fighting for equality in various ways. You are not alone in this endeavor.

It sounds hard, and competing right now and keeping my sponsors happy is hard enough…

I get that it’s not easy or comfortable to use your status to fight for the next generation. But it’s necessary. Skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding and BMX all had female pioneers that made it possible, and perhaps just a little easier, for you to do what you love today. It’s time to step up for the girls and women that ride with you and the girls who come after you. What is worthwhile is never easy. If it were, these issues would have been solved long before you got here.

What will your legacy be?

In ten or twenty years from now, what will your legacy in action sports be? The world championship titles and big name competition results change from year to year, the records get shattered, too fast it seems, but fighting and supporting your fellow female athlete is absolutely timeless.

If you are one of the top female surfers, skateboarders or BMX riders in the world and signing lucrative endorsement deals with companies that can effectively create change, think about having your agent ask for that inclusion rider.

A young girl may ask you for an autograph today because you won an important event, but future generations of girls may be thanking you down the line for what you have done for all women in your sport.

5 Great Books To Grab If You Love Surfing Or Skateboarding.
Street Angel Goes to Juvie by Jim Rugg
Surfgirl Magazine & Like a Dog by Tara Jepsen
Swell by Liz Clark
Herewith

Summer is a great time to read in between your surf sessions at the beach, or in the warm summer evenings while winding down from that long, hot skate sesh you had earlier in the day. We found some great books (and a couple magazines) you may not know about, but that should be on your radar!

Here are some of our favorite reads:

1. Street Angel Goes to Juvie - another awesome book in the Street Angel series by Jim Rugg & Brian Maruca. If you are not familiar with Street Angel, Jesse "Street Angel" Sanchez, also known as "The Deadliest Girl Alive"  is a homeless skateboarding pre-teen who fights the bad guys in each of her adventures. There are more books in the series and you'll want to read them all.  Jesse is a badass and inspiring to so many girls and women - especailly those who skate.  One of our mini shredder friends, Kala, reads each book the minute she gets her hands on it and then over and over until the next one comes out!  The series is addicting!!  You can get Street Angel Goes to Juvie  HERE

2. Surfgirl Magazine - while not technically a book, it is one of our favorite reads because the entire magazine features women's surfing - it's chock full of travel destinations, interviews with your fav female surfers and articles on anything to do with surfing. And we have to say that the awesome visuals hook us in every time!  You can subscribe HERE but you can usually find a copy at your local Barnes & Noble bookstore too!

3. Like a Dog by Tara Jepsen - Tara is a well known skateboarder, writer, filmer and so much more. Like a Dog is about a scrappy young skateboarder's story of underground worlds and fringe existences, confusing family relationships and the struggle for intimacy. We are huge fans of Tara's so we loved this book! It's paperback and lightweight, so throw it into your beach bag for a read by the waters edge.  It deals with some hard subject matter - so best for teens and above. Get a copy HERE

4. Swell: A Sailing Surfer's Voyage of Awakening by Liz Clark,- This book is not technically just about surfing, but Captain Liz Clark spent her youth dreaming of traveling the world by sailboat and surfing remote waves. When she was 22, she met a mentor who helped turn her desire into reality. Embarking on an adventure that most only fantasize about, she set sail from Santa Barbara, California, as captain of her 40-foot sailboat, Swell, headed south in search of surf, self, and the wonder and learning that lies beyond the unbroken horizon. This book will make you want to start planning your next adventure...  Order a copy HERE or pick it up next time you are at Target or Barnes & Noble.

5. Herewith - is a hybrid - it falls in-between book and magazine for its thick paper stock, saturated imagery, genius layouts, clean design and the ability to make us want more with every issue. Its focus is on surfing but no matter what images and articles they run, it's stunning and a great read. Inspiring and gorgeous to say the least!  You can order it HERE
